A modern Beowulf

Posted by Guest Blogger on Friday, 09 December 2005 11:25.

We are lucky to have the great Old English epic poem Beowulf. A copy of it was written down by a scribe about 1000 AD, and this sole existing copy was scorched but not destroyed during a fire in Sir Robert Cotton’s library in 1731. In 1786 an Icelandic scholar, G.J. Thorkelin, organised for transcripts to be made, before parts of the original became illegible.

The poem helps connect us to our distant forebears. For this reason, it is undeniably an important cultural artefact for Anglo-Saxons in particular and Europeans in general. Which is why the following story is disappointing.

Meta Cultural Flags

Posted by James Bowery on Friday, 09 December 2005 05:41.

Multiculturalism is the belief that all cultures should coexist in intimate contact with each other and that territories are largely irrelevant so long as “democracy” rules.  There is a countervailing belief, best called “metaculturalism”, which is that each culture should have its own territorial allocation, and that democracy is largely irrelevant as long as people can choose their cultural affiliation and move to a territory for that culture, with territorial adjustments to accomodate such migration.  Some cultures would naturally be racially separatist, and some would be multiracial—some might even be multicultural within their own territory.  The point is there is an alternative to world-wide multicultural supremacy.

Taking my inspiration from the recent replacement of the Red Cross flag with the Red Crystal flag for use in territories hostile to Christianity (interestingly the Muslims didn’t demand this change—Jews did), I’ve designed a set of metacultural flags for ethnostates—territories whose culture is oriented to blood and soil.

Le Pen’s HARDtalk

Posted by Guessedworker on Tuesday, 06 December 2005 00:33.

Thanks are due to the commenter mysteriously and, one would think, temporarily calling himself LePen for posting a video link to Jean-Marie Le Pen’s interview with the BBC’s Stephen Sackur.  It was posted today on the thread to a piece I put up nearly three weeks ago.  It is worth watching, lasts one hour and is part of the BBC’s HARDtalk series which goes out on BBC World.  It was broadcast on 28th November.

There are two ways you could approach this interview.  You can study Le Pen’s performance for signs of his suitability for the Presidency, if he stands.  Or you can marvel at Sackur’s wildly excessive liberal posturing, right down to calling Nick Griffin a racist criminal and Le Pen himself a racist and anti-semite.  The latter, given Sackur’s problems in Israel in the past, does seem slightly hypocritical.

But anyway the anti-semite jibe paid off because Le Pen wearily and correctly explained that he had never said the fateful words that all liberals in France attribute to him, to whit “the holocaust is a detail of history”.  He was referring, he told Sackur, to the gas chambers - which, as it happens, go entirely unremarked in all the WW2 Allied leaders’ memoirs.

Be that as it may, the opportunity for the self-appointed guardians of our anti-racist purity to spontaneously combust was just too tempting.

Murder and culture war - Update 3rd December

Posted by Guessedworker on Saturday, 03 December 2005 00:38.

No Briton who is in long trousers and is not actually a hermit could have failed to miss the big Kulturkampf event of the year, which has been on our screens for the last couple of weeks.  A beanfeast of white guilt has been cooked up, particularly by the BBC who just love this sort of thing.  It’s been Stephen Lawrence Mk II, but with a guilty verdict ... the two brainless chav killers of the inevitably academic black teenager Anthony Walker have been sentenced to serve a minimum of 17 years and 23 years respectively.

The victim has been lovingly called “Anthony” by the media.  His not obviously academic parents have been applauded outside the court - no doubt by the usual activist crowd - and praised by the police for their “dignity and calm”.  His not obviously academic white girlfriend has shed her tears on screen.  We have had the full treatment, and for ever more “Anthony” will be the boy who died because he was black.

The verdict was correct under present law ... which is more than can be said in the case of the brutally murdered Christopher Yates.

Integrated Public Schools Bad For Blacks Too

Posted by James Bowery on Friday, 02 December 2005 08:57.

Harvard’s Roland Fryer takes on the conventional wisdom that diversity is strength in public schools:

It appears that in integrated public schools, “acting white”—getting higher than average grades—does in fact lead to social consequences for black students. However, in private schools and unintegrated public schools this does not appear to be the case. Apparently, the social context of integrated public schools lends itself to an “oppositional culture” where blacks reinforce cultural norms in opposition to the norms of the dominant social class to self-identify.

So white flight from the diverse public schools may be good for the black students “left behind” in those public schools.  Of course, the politically correct fundamentalists would say it doesn’t matter how many black students suffer since integration is an overriding moral goal.  Integrate now, observe the damage and then try various things to lower the damage.  If it takes a generation, two, three… lost to the experiments with our children’s lives to get it right—so be it.  Sacrifices must be made.

Europe’s first woman suicide bomber

Posted by Guessedworker on Friday, 02 December 2005 00:35.

... and let us hope the last.  The release of the identity of the Belgium women who blew herself up in Baghdad on November 9th occasions more pity than anger, I think.  The Times article reports:-

After a conventional upbringing in industrial southern Belgium, during which she briefly dabbled in drugs and alcohol and held a series of jobs, including as a baker’s assistant, Mme Degauque said her daughter became “more Muslim than Muslim”.

When she married her second husband, a Belgian of Moroccan descent, Degauque took to wearing the chador - the head-to-toe dress worn by devout Muslim women. “The religion was totally ingrained in her. She only lived for that. She had learned Arabic,” her mother said.

Mme Degauque described her daughter’s gradual estrangement from the rest of her family and subsequent disappearance. Mme Degauque said she suspected her daughter’s involvement in the suicide bombing as soon as she heard a Belgian woman had been involved.

“I had a bad feeling,” she said. “For three weeks, I had tried to call her but there was no answer.”

Identity crisis

Posted by Guessedworker on Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:49.

One of the meagre amusements in watching one’s country slip by degrees into the clutches of unassimilable aliens is the complete hash they make of claiming to be, in any meaningful way, “British”.  No attempt at it really.  Nothing that rises above the derisory, anyway.  Nothing remotely sufficient, for example, to justify the most brazen and comical claims they make to my heritage - while at the same time advancing quite the most outrageous and perfectly conflicting demands on my tolerance.

But then for my sins I don’t expect anything else.  Rumours abounded during my long-past formative years that the, shall we say, personal probity of Arab and Indian sub-continental gentlemen was not always of the highest.  Something regrettable probably stuck and, today, all the experience of said gentlemen garnered by my clearly racist if not actually Nazi, colonial forefathers must be poisoning my narrow, unworthy mind.  I am quite blinded to the precious worth – nay, more – the cultural equality of these splendid persons and their splendid, burqa-encased person—females (and my, how grateful I am to be saved by their modesty from my base lust).

But it isn’t all bad news.  When the hopelessly correct BBC, an “equal opportunities employer”, cannot elicit an end to the confusion even a right-wing dinosaur like me may allow himself a brief moment of ecstatic celebration.
